Jeffrey D. Schultz, John G. West Jr. editors. The C. S. Lewis Readers’ Encyclopedia.
As I said in a recent post, I have finished reading the three leading Lewis biographies.
I decided to buy this highly acclaimed reference book. It is about $30.00 in hardcover. I found a used copy and got it for $7.00 including tax and shipping.
Its 464 pages include a 67 page biography and signed articles by Lewis scholars on the 52 books, 153 essays and other writings including prefaces, book reviews, and poems. There are also articles on people and places in his life as well as 50 pictures.
The first article is on the Abecedarium Philosophicum, a poem he wrote with his friend Owen Barfield in The Oxford Magazine (November 30, 1933, page 298) It is a fun commentary on the letters of the alphabet. (page 67). The last entry is “You rest upon me all my days,” a poem about the difficulty of faith. The speaker feels like a person trapped in a burning desert. God is the unyielding sun. (page 433)
I have used it to check dates on various people and get an overview of various Lewis writings.
Highly recommended. You will learn a lot of Lewis’ breadth and depth as you scan these pages.
