When we believe that God is truly God it changes our lives at their very core.
Jethro before
Jethro was a Midianite priest.
The Midianites descended from Abraham through his concubine Keturah (Genesis 25:1-6; 1 Chronicles 1:32)).
The Midianites had a complicated relationship with the Jews.
Some of them were travelling traders and bought Joseph from his brothers and sold him into slavery in Egypt ( Genesis 37:28, 36).
They oppressed the Jews during the time of the Judges and were defeated by Gideon (Judges 6-8).
They joined the Moabites and seduced the Jews into idol worship (Numbers 22:5-7; 25:1-18.
However, Moses asked his Midianite brother-in-law, Hobab, to help guide them in the desert. His agreement is not recorded in Numbers but his descendants later inherited land in Judah (Numbers 10:29-32, Judges 1:16)
What did Jethro believe before he visited Moses in Exodus 18?
Did the Midianites preserve a compromised version of the worship of Abraham’s God like the Samaritans did later? We do not know for sure.
Jethro after
Jethro brought Moses’ wife and sons to him when the Jews were camped at Mount Sinai.
When he heard about all that God had done to the Egyptians he confessed that he knew that God was God. He then sacrificed to God and ate a fellowship meal with the leaders of the Jews in God’s presence. A Midianite priest became a follower of the true God. (Exodus 18:1-12)
Our Jethro moments
We need to believe that God is truly God and, when we do, it changes our lives. We accept salvation through Jesus and see God’s indwelling Spirit change us. We become more like Jesus.
When we believe that God is truly God it changes our lives at their very core.
Questions for consideration:
