Andrew David Naselli and D. A. Carson. Exegetical Fallacies (forthcoming August 4, 2026)

I am looking forward to this update on Carson’s important work which has had two editions. It cautions us as we interpret and teach Scripture against common but unnecessary errors. This will be a must purchase for most of us.

From Andy Naselli’s website:

I am Professor of Systematic Theology and New Testament for Bethlehem College and Seminary in Minneapolis, and I am lead pastor of Christ the King Church in Stillwater, Minnesota.

He has worked closely with D. A. Carson and John Piper and their ministries.

D. A. Carson. Exegetical Fallacies

There have been two previous editions of this important and influential work, 1984, 1996. As mentioned in the Preface (page 13) Carson first gave this material in a lecture series at Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon in 1983. I was a student at Western from 1974 to 1977 and joined the faculty as Library Director, also teaching Church History, in 1983 just before these lectures. I remember them well.

Don became a colleague when I was on the faculty at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School from 1993-1997.

This book addresses potential mistakes in interpretation in the following areas:
1. Word-Study Fallacies
2. Grammatical Fallacies
3. Logical Fallacies
4. Presuppositional and Historical Fallacies

Among other features this book has a Scripture index. I own a Kindle version of the book and recently purchased a used print copy to more easily use this index for study projects. Today there are used copies available from $5.00.

Below is a 2025 announcement from The Gospel Coalition:

Please be in prayer for The Gospel Coalition’s cofounder, Don Carson.

As Don shared in a recent Christmas letter, the physical and cognitive limitations arising from his Parkinson’s disease have forced him to end his speaking engagements and other ministry involvements. Along with scores around the world who have been touched by his decades of biblically faithful writing, teaching, and church leadership, we want to express gratitude to Don for the founding vision and ongoing guidance he has provided TGC, which marks its 20th anniversary next year.

Please ask the Lord to show mercy to Don and his family, granting them the knowledge of him and the sweetness of his presence as they walk through this trial. Though he’s slowing down and facing significant health challenges, we take comfort in the truth Don is fond of reminding us: “I am not suffering from anything that a good general resurrection can’t fix.”
